1. General Appearance and Characteristics
 
Active, compact, short coupled and essentially well balanced, leonine in appearance, proud with a dignified bearing. Well knit in frame and tail carried well over the back.  A quiet dog, aloof and independent yet loyal.  A bluish black tongue and its unique in its stilted gait.


2. Head and Skull

 

Skull flat and broad with moderate stop, well filled out under the eyes.  Muzzle moderate in length and broad from the eyes to the nose.  Nose black (except creams, fawns and blues) but large and wide in all cases.

 

3. Eyes

 

Dark, oval shaped, medium sized.  A matching colored eye is permissible in blues and fawns.  A clean eye free from entropian never being penalized for sake of more size.

 

4. Ears

 

Small, thick, slightly rounded at tip, carried stiffly and wide apart but tilting well forward over the eyes and slightly towards each other giving the peculiar characteristic scowling expression of the breed.  Scowl never to be achieved by loose wrinkled skin of head.

 

5. Mouth

 

Teeth strong and level, jaws strong with a perfect, regular and complete scissor bite.  Tongue bluish black, flews and roof of mouth black.  Gums preferably black.

 

6. Neck

 

Strong, full, not short, set well on the shoulders and slightly arched.

 

7. Forequarters

 

Shoulders muscular and sloping.  Forelegs perfectly straight, well boned and of moderate length.

 

8. Body

 

Chest broad and deep, ribs well sprung, back sort, straight and strong, loins powerful.

 

9. Hindquarters

 

Hindlegs muscular, hocks well let down and perfectly straight with the minimal angulations essential to produce the breeds unique stilted gait.

 

10. Feet

 

Small, round and catlike, standing well up on the toes and well knuckled up.

 

11. Gait / Movement

 

Short and stilted. Forelegs and hindlegs moving parallel to each other and straight forward.

 

12. Tail

 

Set high and carried well over the back.

 

13. Coat

 

A.) Rough / Profuse, dense, straight, stand off.  Outer coat rather coarse in texture with a soft woolly undercoat especially thick around the neck forming mane or ruff, with cullottes or breechings on the backs of the thighs.

B.) Smooth: Short, abundant, dense, straight, upstanding, not flat and plush like in texture.

 

Any artificial shortening of the coat which alters the natural outline should be penalized in both coats.

 

14. Size

 

Males:  19" to 22"  (48-56 cm)    and the females: 18" to 20" (46-51 cm)

 

15. Colours

 

Whole coloured red, black, blue, fawn, cream or white, frequently shaded but not parti-coloured.

 

16. Faults

 

Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered as a fault and the seriousness with which it is regarded should be in direct proportion to its degree.

 

Note: Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.

TEMPERAMENT:         Indépendant, fidèle mais réservé.

 

CRÂNE:                         Plat et large, stop peu prononcé.

 

OREILLES:                    Petites, épaisses, légèrement arrondies au bout, portées raides et écartées.  Le  scowl ne peut jamais être dû à un relâchement de la peau.


YEUX:                            Foncés, en amandes, relativement petits et secs.

 

MUSEAU:                       Longueur modérée, large.

 

BOUCHE:                       Denture en ciseaux, langue, gencives, palais bleu-noir.

 

COU:                                Fort et plein.

 

ANTERIEURS:                Parfaitement droits, de longueur modérée.

 

CORPS:                           Poitrine large et profonde, dos court.

 

POSTERIEURS:             Musclés avec angulation minimale.

 

PIEDS:                             Petits et ronds, en pied de chat.

 

QUEUE:                           Plantée haut et bien portée sur le dos.

 

DEMARCHE:                  Guindée.

 

PELAGE:                         Poils longs ou courts.

 

COULEUR:                      Unicolore, noir, rouge, fauve, bleu, crème ou blanc.

 

TAILLE:                            Mâles: (48-56 cm) au garrot - Femelles: (46-51 cm) au garrot.
